Hospital Redevelopment Nick’s advocacy was pivotal to Government’s commitment to over $500 million in Budget ‘25 for the redevelopment of Nelson Hospital addressing the shortage of beds, seismic vulnerability and outdated facilities. Work is underway, the new ED opens in 2026 and full completion is due
Stand Alone NMIT
The campaign co-ordinated by Nick with the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough Councils, 8 Te Tauihu iwi and local business organisations has helped secure and reinvigorate NMIT as our locally governed polytechnic. Huge credit is due to the local NMIT team on improving financial viability.
EFFECTIVE ADVOCACY
Nelson-Tasman Rain Radar
The Government’s recent commitment of $5 million to improve emergency management in storm events with a rain radar is the product of relentless advocacy to the PM and Ministers by Nick, neighbouring Tasman District Mayor Tim King and TDC hydrologist Martin Doyle.
Tahunanui Beach Contaminated Waste
The successful cleanup and removal of over 10,000 tonnes of contaminated wood waste last year from the beach was hugely assisted by $3.4 million of Ministry for the Environment funding Nick helped secure.
Maitai Flood Protection Improvements
Council is fast tracking $6 million of stop bank improvements and flood walls to better protect Nelson homes most vulnerable to flooding in Nelson East. Nick’s advocacy for access to the Regional Infrastructure Fund has helped secure 60% funding support from Government.
