Storm Recovery

Nick has led Nelson’s Storm Recovery Taskforce from the Aug ’22 flood. Council has successfully rebuilt the city’s badly damaged roads, pipes, parks and walkways, stabilised landslides and secured Government support for buying out the worst damaged properties.

New eBus Service

Nelson City Council, with neighbours Tasman, in 2023 introduced NZ’s first all-electric bus service doubling passenger patronage. The next step in 2026 is the new Millers Acre Bus Hub co-locating the InterCity, National Park mini-buses and eBuses and in 2027 introducing integrated ticketing.

Reduced Waste Emissions

The installation of gas wells at York Landfill have reduced Nelson’s GHG emissions by 40,000 tonnes. The next step is fully utilising the gas by working with Nelson Hospital on their new energy centre and finding other uses for the remaining landfill gas.

Growing Community Housing

Council has helped get over 100 social and community homes built this past term - more than ever before - by working with the Housing Trust, Habitat for Humanity, Iwi and Kainga Ora. We are partnering with the Salvation Army and the Male Room to help address homelessness.

Tahunanui Beach Surf Life Club

Council is partnering with the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club to provide new beach facilities, a 2022 election commitment. Council is providing $1.6 million through the LTP and helped secure $1.6 million from Government. An agreement has been signed with building starting next year.
